| Showing the solid 4-charactor headcode box of the original design, but blanked out with two white dots for frontal indication, No. 46001 is seen from its No. 1 end at Severn Tunnel Junction in November 1978 with a railtour. CJM. |

| No. 46009 seen at Par in company with 46014 shows the opposite side of the loco to the above view and also shows the revised front end incorporating sealed beam marker lights fitted from 1975 on classified overhaul. The buffer beam equipment on this loco shows dual (air/vacuum) braking and steam heat connections. CJM. |

| Preserved No. D172 Ixion is seen from its No. 1 end and shows 1960s BR green livery, white body side grilles, small yellow warning panel and a wide grey band between the cab doors at the base of the body. Additional equipment is a hi-intensity headlight, required to meet the latest Railtrack Group Standard. No. D172 is usually kept at Crewe Heritage centre and is authorised for normal use on Railtrack metals. CJM. |
